PARTICIPANT INFORMATION SHEET
CIDI-SF 3.0
Invitation
You are invited to participate in a research study that aims to examine the performance of a newly developed diagnostic interview for mental disorders.
The study is being conducted by Mr. Matthew Sunderland PhD Candidate at the University of New South Wales and Prof. Gavin Andrews from the Clinical Research Unit for Anxiety and Depression (CRUfAD), St Vincents Hospital.
Before you decide whether or not you wish to participate in this study, it is important for you to understand why the research is being done and what it will involve. Please take the time to read the following information carefully and discuss it with others if you wish:
1. What is the purpose of this study? The purpose is to investigate whether a newly developed diagnostic interview for mental disorders adequately measures what it intends to measure. The investigators are particularly interested in whether or not the interview is a valid way of assessing mood and anxiety disorders.
2. Why have I been invited to participate in this study? We require a range of different people to complete the interview in order to get a variety of different responses to check that the interview is valid across the whole community. It does not matter whether you have had one or more of the disorders being examined before.
3. What if I dont want to take part in this study, or if I want to withdraw later? Participation in this study is completely voluntary. It is up to you whether or not you participate. If you wish to withdraw from the interview once it has started, you can do so at any time without having to give a reason. All you need to do is close the web-browser prior to submitting the information and you will not be included in the study.
4. What does this study involve? The questionnaire takes on average 20 minutes to complete and you will be provided with detailed instructions at various stages of the questionnaire. The questionnaire will ask you about problems with mood or anxiety that you may have experienced across your lifetime. If at any time you feel uncomfortable with a question you may refuse to answer without given a reason or you may stop the questionnaire by simply closing the web-browser. No information will be collected that could identify you and the information you submit is completely secure and encrypted to prevent any unauthorised access.
5. How is this study being paid for? The study is being funded by a National Health and Medical Research Council project grant. No money is paid to individual researchers.
6. Are there risks to me in taking part in this study? There are no known risks in taking part in this study. If you wish to withdraw, you may do so at any time without having to give a reason.
7. Will I benefit from the study? This study aims to further medical knowledge and improve future diagnostic interviews by attempting to provide information on the performance of a newly developed diagnostic interview. You may not benefit directly but the information you provide will improve the diagnostic process in the future and may benefit others.
8. Will taking part in this study cost me anything, and will I be paid? Participation in this study will not cost you anything. Since participation is voluntary we do not offer participants any compensation for their time.
9. How will my confidentiality be protected? Any information that is collected in this study will remain confidential and will be disclosed only with your permission, or except as required by law. No personal identifiable information will be collected as part of this study. Only the researchers named above will have access to your details and results that will be held securely at the Clinical Research Unit for Anxiety and Depression St Vincents Hospital.
10. What happens with the results? We plan to discuss/publish the results in peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations. The results of the current study will also be written up as part of a PhD thesis. In any publication, information will be provided in such a way that you cannot be identified. Brief results of the study will be provided by a link on the CRUfAD website once the study is complete.
11. What should I do if I want to discuss this study further before I decide? If you would like to know more about the study, please do not hesitate to contact Matthew Sunderland on 8382 1437 or Professor Gavin Andrews on 8382 1400.
12. Who should I contact if I have concerns about the conduct of this study? This study has been approved by St Vincents Hospital HREC. Any person with concerns or complaints about the conduct of this study should contact the Research Office who is nominated to receive complaints from research participants. You should contact them on 02 8382 2075 and quote 09/190.
By completing the online questionnaire you are providing informed consent that you have read and understand the aims and nature of the study and that you agree to participate as a participant in the study described above. You do not have to participate in the study if you do not want to and can pull out at any time prior to completing the questionnaire by simply closing your web-browser.
